“Active transportation is any form of human-powered transportation.
It is any trip made for the purposes of getting yourself, or others, to
a particular destination - to work, to school, to the store or to visit
friends. As long as it is "active", you can choose the mode - walking,
cycling, wheeling, in-line skating, skateboarding, ice skating (eg. on
a canal). Walking and cycling are the most popular forms of active transportation.
It can also involve combining modes such as walking/cycling with public

Seniors Income Tax Preparation Program
Do you need help with your 2007 Income Tax Return? The South West Shore Volunteer Services is offering to do them for you free of charge.
Since 1971, the Canada Revenue Agency has worked with community volunteer
organizations to help people complete their income tax and benefit returns.
The Community Volunteer Income Tax Program, which is endorsed by the Canada
Customs and Revenue Agency, provides a network of tax volunteers in communities
throughout Canada. Volunteers help other members of their community
to honor their tax obligations and to receive the credits to which they
are entitled. Under this program, volunteers donate their time to
provide this free service to others in their communities, who otherwise
may not have the funds to pay to have their returns completed.
Starting February 18th, 2008 the South West Shore Volunteer Services,
a charitable arm of the South West Shore Development Authority, is offering
this program to the seniors of Shelburne County. If you are unable
to complete your income tax and benefit return by yourself or unable to
pay for assistance, our Volunteer Income Tax Program may be for you.
Specially trained volunteers can help you complete your income tax
and benefit return if your income is low and your tax situation is simple.
Volunteers do not complete income tax and benefit returns for deceased
persons, bankrupt individuals, or individuals who have capital gains or
losses, employment expenses, or business or rental income and expenses.
If you are interested in having your income taxes prepared by a qualified
volunteer, or have any questions, call the South West Shore Volunteer Services
at (902) 637-2847 or 1-800-565-0397.
We are here to serve you!

Town of Shelburne Parks and Recreation
Department 10,000 Step Challenge is back in business
The Town of Shelburne’s Parks and Recreation Department is re-launching its popular 10,000 Step Challenge program, with some changes. Funding has been received from the Department of Health Promotion and Protection to allow for the purchase of additional step counters.
Step Counters can be borrowed from the Parks and Recreation Department Office at no cost for as long as you want, or they can be purchased for $7.50. There is a 100% buyback guarantee if it is returned to the Parks and Rec. Department in good condition.
Participants can then begin their walking program or any other activity to begin the 10,000 Step Challenge.
The program you choose can be structured and formal or very informal. Participants are encouraged to monitor their daily step counts and develop a plan to increase your daily step count to reach your goal and achieve health benefits. Sample plans are available. Optional Activity Log Sheets are available for those that want to track their activity level on a continual basis. Additional resource information is available from the Parks and Recreation Office.
The average person’s stride is about 2.5 feet long. It takes just over 2,000 steps to walk one mile and 10,000 steps are close to 5 miles. Walking 10,000 steps per day is a good starting point or goal, but to maximize health benefits 2,000-4,000 of the steps should be done at a brisk pace. Moderate intensity is a necessary part of the 10,000 steps per day target.
Check with your physician before starting this program if you have any health concerns.
The program is simple – wear a step counter all day long to motivate yourself to be more active throughout the day. Wearing a step counter (pedometer) all day is a great way to measure how active you have been – and to inspire you to move more on days you have been sedentary.
It is widely recognized that increased physical activity results in
better health and well-being. Increasing physical activity can be as simple
as walking a bit more than we already do each day. Physical benefits have
been linked to walking for years. The best thing is that walking is low
cost and low impact. 10,000 steps per day walking programs are growing
in popularity world-wide.
The benefits of regular physical activity:
If you regularly monitor your activity and achieve your steps goals you will:
* Feel less tired and have more energy for everyday tasks
* Feel more confident and be less stressed
* Sleep better
* Have better heart health (including cholesterol and blood pressure)
* Find it easier to maintain a healthy weight
* Have stronger bones and muscles
* Reduce your risks of many serious health problems in old age
Increasing your daily activity can:
* Help people achieve and maintain a healthy body weight
* Reduce the risk of developing coronary heart disease (CHD) and the
risk of dying from CHD
* Reduce feelings of depression and anxiety
* Reduce the risk of stroke
* Reduce the risk of having a second heart attack in people who have
already had one heart attack
* Lower both total blood cholesterol and triglycerides and increases
high-density lipoproteins (HDL) or the "good" cholesterol
* Lower the risk of developing high blood pressure
* Help reduce blood pressure in people who already have hypertension
* Lower the risk of developing non-insulin-dependent (type 2) diabetes
mellitus
* Reduce the risk of developing colon cancer
* Promote psychological well-being and reduces feelings of stress
* Help build and maintain healthy bones, muscles, and joints
* Help older adults become stronger, and better able to move about
without falling or becoming excessively fatigued

Walking to Improve Your Health
By Adam Dedrick, Physical Activity & Community School
Coordinator
Summer is here and more and more people are out walking.
This is partly due to the warm weather but it is also because walking is
an excellent physical activity. People of all ages and virtually all levels
of physical ability can walk comfortably with little risk of injury. It
is simple to do, does not cost anything and you can do it anywhere. For
many it is the single most beneficial all purpose physical activity.
Walking is enjoyable, relaxing and good for you too!
Regular brisk walking for 30 minutes on four to seven days a week will
reduce the risk of cardiovascular disease, diabetes, obesity, osteoporosis,
and some cancers. Regular walkers also benefit from increased energy levels,
more stamina, better sleep, and lower stress levels.
Lack of time is one of the main reasons we are not active
but remember you can walk anywhere and at any time. You can go for short
walks throughout the day and still get the health benefits. Try walking
3 times a day for 10 minutes each time and you will be well on your way.
Another way to stay active is by joining a walking club.
Walking clubs provide benefits in not only physical activity but also social
activity. They are a great way to meet new people and to stay motivated.
Walking clubs are currently being developed in Shelburne in each of the
Municipal districts and one in the Town (see press release).

Physical Activity Strategy forming Walking Clubs
- Volunteer Leaders Needed
A Physical Activity Strategy is being developed for the Town and Municipality of Shelburne and one of the first projects is to develop walking clubs. The goal is to have a walking club in each community of each district of the Municipality and one in the Town. Walking clubs are a great way for people to be social and most importantly to be physically active.
The first step to developing the walking clubs is to identify local community leaders who will help to organize the clubs in their respective communities. Ideally these leaders will eventually run the walking clubs with assistance from the Physical Activity Strategy.
If you are interested in forming a walking club in your community or you know someone who would be please contact Adam Dedrick by phone: 875-2831 or by email: adedrick@staff.ednet.ns.ca.
