The Community Foundation of Nova Scotia is a public foundation established by and for the people of Nova Scotia.
The Community Foundation of Nova Scotia is an emerging community foundation. We are a member of Community Foundations of Canada, which represents a network of 160+ community foundations nationally, and who together hold close to $3 Billion in assets. In 2007, community foundations distributed over $175 Million to communities across Canada.
We engage in three core activities:
we establish and maintain endowment funds to support registered charities
and other eligible recipients;
we engage in strategic grant-making; and
we provide leadership with respect to a broad range of community issues,
connecting people who care with causes that matter.
As an independent charitable organization, we are limited only by the will and imagination of our donors. We believe in the power of individuals and organizations working together to effect positive change in our communities. We encourage projects which promote self-sufficiency and long term sustainability but we’re not afraid to experiment either. We recognize that innovation, creativity and entrepreneurialism are key contributors to success, especially in our Atlantic Canadian environment. We actively seek projects which have the potential for high impact, no matter how big or small they may be.

Consultation Session on Youth, Feb. 2
What would it take to make Shelburne County children and youth healthy, safe, nurtured, and responsible - and given the right opportunities to be the best they can be? On February 2, that is the question YOU can help answer.

Over the next month, CAYAC – in partnership with the Acadia Centre for Social and Business Entrepreneurship – will be facilitating community consultations in Shelburne, Digby, and Yarmouth Counties. The purpose of these consultations will be to gather opinions about how we can take action to improve the lives of our children, families, and youth.

Keep It Moving Day success thanks to participants, target group identified for physical activity strategy
With over 1400 taking part in the second annual Keep It Moving Day it was once again a big success. Individuals, families, groups, schools and a number of businesses all participated in a variety of activities. Their involvement is what made this event so successful and it is greatly appreciated. It not only shows support for the initiative but also for the community.
This year there were a number of incentives to get people involved including prizes. The Early Bird Registration Incentive offered participants the chance to be entered into draws for free Keep It Moving t-shirts. Over sixty registrations made the deadline and t-shirts were given to twenty-five lucky winners.
There was also three prize draws for all general registrations. The Arcon family won a $100 gift certificate toward a pair of sneakers at Gosbee’s Sporting Goods. Shawna Stuart won a $50 Gift Certificate towards the registration fee of a fitness program and Paulette MacDonald received a Keep It Moving Gear Kit.
Keep It Moving Day is an initiative of the Physical Activity Strategy for the Town and Municipality of Shelburne. The main goal of the strategy is to get more people regularly physically active. To focus our efforts in the next phase of the strategy we have identified a single target group: Baby Boomers aged 45-65. The first step will be to gather some baseline information from the group which will be done with a short survey. We are currently seeking individuals to help gather interest and distribute surveys. Anyone interested with helping please contact Adam Dedrick, Physical Activity & Community School Coordinator at 875-2831 or adedrick@staff.ednet.ns.ca.

KEEP IT MOVING DAY 2009
KEEP IT MOVING DAY is back! After the success of last year – over 1200
participants – we are aiming to get even more to take part by making this
year’s event bigger and better.
KEEP IT MOVING DAY is a community wide, day long event to get as many
people as possible physically active. It will take place on Wednesday,
October 21st and the ultimate goal is to have people from all parts of
the Shelburne area (Town and Municipality) participating in physical activities
throughout the day. Everyone is encouraged to take part – individuals,
families, volunteer groups, schools, organizations, businesses, etc. All
you have to do is be physically active for 30 minutes.
You can participate in several ways. Plan an activity on your own like
going for a bike ride or walking with a friend, attend an organized function
like a fitness class or sports program or take the initiative and organize
an activity in your community or workplace. The activity, location, time
and who you do it with are all up to you. And you don’t have to do 30 minutes
all at once. You can break it up into three ten minute intervals throughout
the day. It’s whatever works for you.
To make your participation official make sure to register. You can
register as an individual, family, business, organization, group of friends
or whatever you please. You can register by fax, phone or email and Registration
Forms are available in the brochures (currently in stores) and from these
websites: www.auracom.com/tnshelb and www.municipalityofshelburne.ca.
To enhance this year’s experience we are offering a few incentives:
organized activities such as community walks and free curling; Early Bird
Registration draws for free t-shirts and chances to win great prizes like
a free pair of sneakers.
Taking part in KEEP IT MOVING DAY is not just about physical activity.
It’s also about spending time with family, friends and co-workers, community
pride and having fun.
So plan an activity, get others involved and join the rest of the community
in making this an even more successful and memorable KEEP IT MOVING DAY.

Soapbox Derby Results
On
Saturday July 4th, the Town of Shelburne Parks and Recreation Department
held its 10th Annual Soapbox Derby. Even with the weather being a little
touch and go, people showed up to participate and cheer on the races.
Only 3 kids registered so we had a round robin, with the first place winner
receiving a by into the finals. The other two races would face off to see
how would race in the finals. Five trophies were given out in the junior
division. Third place went to Spencer Enslow, 2nd place went to Michael
Jacklyn, and first place, most innovative design and highest speed of 35km/hour
was Jacob Spears.
After some persuasion from the crowd, three people decided to race in the
finals. Jeremy Shand took on Lionel Enslow, with Jeremy being the winner.
Jeremy faced off against Cindy Spears for the trophy. This race came down
to the wire, with Cindy edging Jeremy out at the last minute. Cindy was
given the first place trophy.
Thank you to the Royal Canadian Legion Branch 63 for sponsoring the event,
and to all that participated. For pictures from this year’s race, go to

Groups Welcome

Residents of Sable River are getting ready for vendors and customers. We’re eager to start a market here in this beautiful little village. Enthusiasm is high among all the vendors and small businesses contacted so far and we welcome more. This initiative grew out of one of the goals of the Shelburne County Women’s Fishnet. The entire county picked up on the idea and local volunteers and supporters have been helping with setup tasks. Banners are being made, signs painted and seedlings planted; knitting needles and tatting shuttles are clicking away.
We noticed that the majority of markets emphasized garden produce so we jumped into the market business wanting to highlight fish as well as garden goodies. Our decision to welcome all vendors led us to select two sites, thereby supporting two local garages. Everyone is Happy!
The community would love to see its singers and songwriters join us to promote their music and increase their contacts. The market welcomes small businesses, which are off the main drag, and invites them to come join us to display their products and advertise the location of their business.
Each location has plenty space for vendors and for customer parking.
This is an outdoor market but we already have a dream plan for building
kiosks and benches. We are opened every Saturday from 9-noon: on sunny
days we expect a crowd – on rainy days, hearty souls!
Vendors will not have to pay a fee in 2009 but they will have to bring
their own table and tidy up after themselves.
If anyone needs information about permits or licenses contact Cindy 656-2793 or Alice 874-1858
Now for the Specials: Free Specials, always available nearby: Tigney walking trail, suspension bridge, Lockeport Beach, Louis Head Beach, Johnson’s Pond Beach, Sable River Picnic Park, Sandy Point Lighthouse, Hayden Road Trail.

Kids Fair Play FUNd needs Fundraising Committee
The Shelburne County Kids Fair Play FUNd needs to re-establish a Fundraising Committee to help meet the increased demand for the program.
Since it was established in 1998, the Shelburne County Kids Fair Play FUNd has assisted many children in the County. The fund was established as a result of discussions initiated by the Municipality of the District of Shelburne, with other municipal units in the County. As a result of their cooperative efforts, the program was developed and began receiving applications for funding.
The number of applications for funding has grown steadily since then. In the last fiscal year, 96 children were assisted with funds to participate in a wide variety of sport, recreation and cultural activities. These children have been given opportunities to participate that would otherwise have been lost. The activities have been wide and varied, reflecting the individual interests and needs of each child. Applications have been received from all corners of the County. Children have ranged in age from pre-school to just under 19 – the maximum. Last year the total cost of allocations through the FUNd was just over $15,000.00.
The Kids Fair Play FUNd relies on a number of sources of funding. A startup grant was received from the Department of Health Promotion and Protection. Each municipal unit in the County contributes annually to the FUNd. Donations are received from individuals and groups in a number of ways. The Committee also works closely with funding programs such as Sport Nova Scotia’s Kidsport and the Canadian Tire Jumpstart program, to allow for maximum participation.
In the past, a Fundraising Committee conducted events such as an annual golf tournament at the River Hills Golf and Country Club, sold tickets on various items and held other activities to supplement the other sources of funding The Fundraising Committee has not been active for a couple of years and its absence is now being felt. With an increasing number of applications, the FUNd’s resources have been declining and need to be bolstered.
The Kids Fair Play FUND is looking to reestablish its Fundraising Committee to meet this need. New members for the Committee and fresh ideas for fundraising are being sought. A meeting has been set for Tuesday May 12 at 6:30pm in the Ladies Auxiliary Room at the Community Centre in Shelburne. People who are unable to attend that meeting are asked to contact their local Recreation Department if they are interested in helping the FUNd. Help make a difference in a Shelburne County child’s life.

Town of Shelburne, Planning for the Future
What kind of place do we want the Town of Shelburne to be in 10 or 25 years?
This is the question that our community will be working to answer over the next six months.
The Town of Shelburne will be inviting community members into conversations that will range from what they value most about Shelburne, to the challenges they believe the Town needs to address in order to ensure a healthy future. Notices for these conversations will be advertised. The result of this work will be a strategic plan for the Town which will help align community efforts and investments with our citizens’ ideas about what Shelburne intends to be in the mid to long term. The Plan will address the Town’s future financial health, social and cultural well-being, and how to benefit from our natural resources while also improving upon our stewardship of the environment. The Town of Shelburne has engaged the services of Stantec (formerly Jacques Whitford) to assist with this consultation and planning process. Questions and comments can be directed to the Town of Shelburne’s Town Hall, ph 875-2991, email shelburnetown@ns.aliantzinc.ca

Last year over 40 different booths displayed information and provided an opportunity to make contact with them on a personal basis at the “Our Community” event in Lockeport. This year it’s ERMES’ turn to host.
“Our Community – Something for Everyone” is held during Volunteer Week,
which is April 19 - 25 in 2009. Musical performances for children
and adults, demonstrations, presentations, games and fun are also being
planned for the day. There will be numerous door prizes provided by exhibitors.
The next meeting to begin planning for 2009 will be held on
Tuesday January 20 at 2:00pm in the ERMES Library.
Representatives of community groups or agencies that may want to take part in planning the day are welcome to attend. Please contact your local Recreation Department, Volunteer Services, or the Community Action Program for Children (CAPC) for more information.

HEALTH PROMOTION/PROTECTION--
Minister Encourages Nova Scotians to Take Advantage of
Healthy Living Tax Credit
-----------------------------------------------------------------
The Healthy Living Tax Credit gives Nova Scotians of all ages an added
incentive to get more active in 2009.
Barry Barnet, Minister of Health Promotion and Protection, hosted an event today, Dec. 16, in Dartmouth to encourage Nova Scotians to get active and take advantage of the tax credit, which has been extended to include adults who participate in fitness activities.
"The expansion of the Healthy Living Tax Credit from children and youth to people of all ages is a critical step to help people make healthier life choices," said Mr. Barnet. "I encourage all Nova Scotians, as they approach the new year, to make a personal commitment to lead a healthier and more active lifestyle."
The expansion was announced as part of the 2008-09 budget.
Programs that qualify include any organized sport, physical recreation or physical activity program that is offered to the public by the government of Canada, the province of Nova Scotia or any municipal government within the province. A private or not-for-profit organization registered to do business in Nova Scotia is also eligible. This includes activities such as swimming lessons, dance classes, ski memberships, gym memberships, hockey registrations and many more.
Adults and children who sign up for registered sport and physical activity programs in 2009 will receive a 8.79 per cent credit off registration fees. To get the credit, they must keep and submit the receipt as part of their 2009 tax returns. They will then receive a maximum tax reduction $44 per person. The maximum expenditure per individual will be $500. Registration fee receipts must be dated on or after Jan. 1, 2009 for an adult to get the credit.
"Hockey is just one of many physical activities that people can register for and receive the tax credit," said Darren Cossar, executive director of Hockey Nova Scotia. "We're glad to see the government of Nova Scotia encouraging people to sign up and get more physically active."
A list of provincial sport organizations, member groups, organized sports and physical recreation and physical activity organizations that are registered for the tax credit is available at www.gov.ns.ca/hpp/HealthyLivingIncentive.html . for more information on the program
The Nova Scotia Healthy Living Tax Incentive was introduced in 2005, providing a credit for registrations of up to $150 in registration fees for eligible children's fitness activities. The maximum expense was increased to $500 in 2006.
It is estimated the tax credit will generate a savings of more than $8 million per year for active Nova Scotians.
